Here are 10 orthopedic surgeons making headlines this week.

Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush welcomed Jorge Chahla, MD, PhD, to its medical team. Dr. Chahla specializes in sports medicine and focuses on the treatment of complex knee, hip and sports-related injuries. He is a team physician for the Chicago White Sox, the Chicago Bulls and the Chicago Fire.

Carolina Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery Associates in Greenville, S.C., added Travis Patterson, MD, to its surgical team. Dr. Patterson is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in hand and upper extremity injuries. In June, he completed a fellowship in hand and upper extremity surgery at Alpert Medical School at Brown University in Providence, R.I.

Jarrad Barber, MD, joined the Hand Center at Harbin Clinic Orthopedics in Rome, Ga. Dr. Barber specializes in hands and upper extremities but can diagnose and treat conditions of the entire musculoskeletal system.

The Center Orthopedic & Neurosurgical Care in Bend, Ore., welcomed Christopher Healy, DO, to its medical staff. Dr. Healy focuses on congenital hand conditions, treatment for arthritis of the hand and wrist, carpal and cubital tunnel release as well as injuries to the nerves, tendons and vessels.

Michael Wilmink, MD, of OrthoArizona is performing outpatient anterior hip replacements so patients can go home sooner. The Phoenix-based surgery center discharges patients three to four hours after their procedure. 

Thomas Fehring, MD, launched the OrthoCarolina Periprosthetic Joint Infection Center in Charlotte, N.C., with four fellow hip and knee surgeons. Dr. Fehring spoke to Becker's about his vision for the program and discussed its importance.

Vern Cooley, MD, performed knee surgery on Tiger Woods. Mr. Woods underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair minor cartilage damage to his left knee. Dr. Cooley, a Murray, Utah-based orthopedic surgeon, expects him to make a full recovery and didn't find any other issues during the procedure.

Johnson City, Tenn.-based Watuga Orthopaedics added Dustin Price, MD, to its orthopedic team. Dr. Price performs hip and knee replacements for arthritis as well as revision surgeries for patients who still have pain, instability, infection or loosening of their implants.

Scott Lynch, MD, an orthopedic surgeon and former director of athletic medicine for Penn State, sued the school and multiple officials, alleging they interfered with medical decisions and then retaliated against him after he reported it. In his lawsuit, Dr. Lynch seeks $50,000 in damages.

Edward Schleyer, MD, joined Coastal Orthopedic Associates in Beverly, Mass. Dr. Schleyer specializes in pediatric, adolescent and adult orthopedic surgery with a particular interest in cartilage preservation surgery and minimally invasive arthroscopy.
