Lower rates of perioperative morbidity are associated with orthopedic shoulder surgery in the ASC setting, according to a study published in Arthroscopy.
Researchers examined whether surgical setting influenced adverse events and readmission rates during non-arthroplasty shoulder surgery. Researchers studied 84,658 patients in the study — 28,730 in the ASC setting and 56,819 in the outpatient setting.
Researchers observed elevated rates of unplanned admission, readmission, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism and wound infection in the HOPD cohort. Researchers said their findings suggested that surgeons are properly selecting patients for the ASC setting. However, researchers stated that patients that have risk factors for unplanned admission should consider HOPDs over ASCs, because "admission from an ASC can be difficult and potentially unsafe."
