Alexander J. Pappas, MD, of OrthoSC in Carolina Forest, Conway and Murrells Inlet, is set to perform his 100th total ankle replacement procedure at Grand Strand Medical Center April 25.

Recent improvements in technology have increased the effectiveness, efficiency and popularity of total ankle replacement, an alternative to ankle fusion surgery.

During the procedure, Dr. Pappas will use a Wright Total Ankle System, which provides customized implants and precise surgical plans for optimal accuracy and high-performance new ankles.

Key benefits of total ankle replacement include pain relief from arthritis; more natural movement than other procedures; and an earlier return to walking and activities compared to other procedures.
