Around 80 people were evacuated from Eisenhower Health's campus in Rancho Mirage, Calif., after a former patient opened fire just outside of the hospital's orthopedic center, according to the Desert Sun.
Five things to know:
1. A man who previously underwent knee surgery at Eisenhower Desert Orthopedic Center opened fire without warning on March 4 just outside the center, and individuals inside the orthopedic unit called 911. According to a separate Desert Sun report, the gunman had suffered complications after knee replacement surgery last year and his son felt that incident resulted in the gunman losing his business and becoming depressed.
2. Within two minutes of the 911 calls, police arrived at the hospital and the gunman was shot. The gunman received treatment at the scene but died.
3. The orthopedic unit was locked down for more than an hour before evacuation, and the local homicide unit is conducting an investigation into the incident. Eisenhower Health did not comment on the incident in the Desert Sun report, citing HIPAA, California privacy laws and the ongoing criminal investigation.
4. The hospital was able to keep the emergency room open, along with the rest of the medical campus.
5. Beyond the gunman, no patients or individuals were harmed during the incident.
