A Blue Cross Blue Shield of America report shows complication rates for knee and hip procedures across the U.S. have decreased, with lower rates in the outpatient setting.

BCBS analyzed medical claims data of its commercially insured members between 2010 and 2017.

Three things to know from the report:

1. Complication rates fell 29 percent for knee procedures and 32 percent for hip procedures.

2. The average length of hospital stay has decreased for inpatient procedures since 2010. Prices for both inpatient knee and hip procedures continue to rise year-over-year.

3. Outpatient complication rates were down 23 percent for knee procedures and 36 percent for hip procedures between 2013 and 2017.
