OrthoCarolina orthopedic surgeon receives grant for irrigation, debridement research: 3 notes

Orthopedic

The Foundation for Arthroplasty Research and Education awarded Charlotte, N.C.-based OrthoCarolina surgeon Thomas K. Fehring, MD, a research grant.

Three things to know:

1. The grant will support Dr. Fehring's research on irrigation and debridement for prosthetic joint infection though the use of intraosseous antibiotics.

2. "When someone gets an acute infection of a knee replacement, traditionally that patient would be taken to the operating room and the joint would be washed out by irrigating and debriding, with only a 50-50 chance [that] it would work," Dr. Fehring said. "If it failed, the joint would then have to be removed."

3. With the grant, Dr. Fehring and his team will conduct a randomized study in two groups of 100 patients.
