Orthopedic

Vail, Colo.-based Steadman Philippon Research Institute welcomed Chelsea Bahney, PhD, as its principal investigator and program director for bone repair and skeletal engineering.

Here are six things to know:

1. In her new role, Dr. Bahney will develop new research programs in conjunction with the institute's clinical expertise and current research as well as serve as a mentor to various researchers and visiting fellows in SPRI's laboratories.

2. Nearly two decades ago, Dr. Bahney first connected with The Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colo., after receiving care for knee injury tears of her anterior cruciate ligament, medical collateral ligament, posterior cruciate ligament and meniscus.

3. Dr. Bahney credits her knee injuries as well as her time spent as a patient at The Steadman Clinic as her motivation to study tissue engineering.

4. After earning her doctorate of philosophy degree in cell and developmental biology at Portland-based Oregon Health and Science University, Dr. Bahney conducted research at UC San Francisco Orthopaedic Trauma Institute on bone regeneration and fracture healing.

5. Dr. Bahney served as a post-doctoral fellow and subsequent faculty member in UC San Francisco's orthopedic surgery department for the past eight years.

6. At SPRI, Dr. Bahney will report directly to Johnny Huard, PhD, chief scientific officer of SPRI and director of the institute's center for regenerative sports medicine.
