During its quarterly earnings call, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company had hired an orthopedic surgeon to oversee its medical clinics. It has been revealed that Basil Besh, MD, chair of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Board of Councilors, is that surgeon, according to TeslaRati.

Dr. Besh is a hand, wrist and elbow surgeon with more than 15 years of experience treating patients. He has also served as president of the California Orthopaedic Association and on the board of directors for the Western Orthopaedic Association. He has experience on the legislative committee for the Alameda-Contra Costa County Medical Association and California Advisory Committee for the Workers' Compensation Research Institute.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Besh is founder of Access Omnicare, a Fremont, Calif.-based multispecialty clinic providing services to promote health among workers and employers.

In the report, Dr. Besh mentioned that he has made protocol improvements and experienced successful outcomes in the four months since joining Tesla, including "accurate diagnoses and reducing needless delays for advanced testing and treatment."

He said the company uses evidence-based medicine to treat work-related injuries, and the Tesla clinics aim to provide "necessary testing and treatment in a timely manner without being hindered by an often cumbersome California Workers' Compensation System that sometimes negatively effects injured workers," Dr. Besh said in the report.
