Orthopedic

T. Andrew Ehmke, DO, demonstrated Stryker's Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Technology for La Grange, Ill.-based Lyons Township High School students at La Grange Memorial Hospital, Chicago Tribune reports.

Here are three things to know:

1. Dr. Ehmke is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon at Hinsdale (Ill.) Orthopaedics who specializes in minimally invasive joint replacement surgery.

2. Dr. Ehmke let each student use the Mako system without a blade on a plastic leg. He explained how robotic-arm assisted surgery can improve knee and hip replacements.

3. The Lyons Township High School students are part of the Future Healthcare Professionals Club, which combines exposure to health professions with community service. The club has seen staff at Maywood, Ill.-based Loyola University Medical Center examine cadavers as well as physicians practice new surgical techniques at the North American Spine Society in Burr Ridge, Ill.
