Orthopedic residents earn $60K, behind neurological surgery, gastroenterology

While orthopedic surgeons typically are among the most highly compensated specialists, orthopedic residents report lower compensation than their peers in many other specialties, according to the Medscape 2018 Resident Salary & Debt Report.

 

Orthopedic residents report earning $60,100 altogether while orthopedic surgery residents report slightly less at $59,900. Both are behind neurological surgery residents, who make $61,8000 and gastroenterology residents who make $64,600 on average. The highest compensating medical residency specialty is allergy and immunology, hitting $68,000 annual compensation on average.

Orthopedic residents did report higher average salary than anesthesiologists, who reported $59,000 and ophthalmologists, who reported $57,500.
