Orthopedic surgeon to know: Dr. Mark Abel of the University of Virginia Health System

Mark Abel, MD, is a pediatric orthopedic surgeon at the Charlottesville-based University of Virginia Health System.

Since beginning his tenure at UVA Health System in 1993, Dr. Abel was named the orthopedic surgery department chair twice and served on quality and strategy committees.

Dr. Abel is now UVA's pediatric orthopedics division head and the Motion Analysis & Motor Performance Laboratory medical director.

Dr. Abel is also a professor in the pediatrics and neurosurgery departments. With expertise in pediatric spinal deformities and scoliosis, Dr. Abel has published numerous book chapters and more than 90 original papers.

Best Doctors recognized Dr. Abel on several occasions, including on its 2017 to 2018 list. Castle Connolly has named him a Best Doctor in America every year since 2006.

After receiving his medical degree from New Orleans-based Tulane University School of Medicine, Dr. Abel completed an internship at Washington University & Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. He completed a residency at UC San Diego, where he also underwent fellowship training.
