Retired orthopedic surgeon and chairman emeritus of Sacramento-based UC Davis Medical Center's orthopedic surgery department Michael W. Chapman, MD, became the first medical doctor to be honored with the UCD Medal, the Daily Democrat reports.

Here are four things to know.

2. The UC Davis' Michael W. Chapman Emergency and Trauma Center, named after Dr. Chapman, features the region's only Level I trauma center for adults and children.

3. Dr. Chapman received his medical degree from the UC San Francisco School of Medicine. He holds eight U.S. patents and authored the four-volume Chapman's Orthopaedic Surgery, a definitive text in the field, in addition to many other publications.

4. Since retiring in 2000, Dr. Chapman has served as chairman of the UCD Foundation.
