Orthopedic surgeon to know: Dr. Tamara Scerpella of the University of Wisconsin

Tamara Scerpella, MD, is chief of the division of sports medicine, vice chair of the department of orthopaedic surgery and team physician for the University of Wisconsin in Madison. She also serves as president of the Forum, a society for women in sports medicine that she joined in 2002.

In 2008, the National Institutes of Health awarded Dr. Scerpella a grant for her research on the role of childhood and adolescent exercise in peak bone mass improvement. The study is ongoing at SUNY Upstate in Syracuse, N.Y., where Dr. Scerpella served as sports division head for nearly a decade.

Dr. Scerpella has mentored medical students and residents throughout her 20-plus years in the medical field, providing advice and insight to women pursuing careers in orthopedic surgery.

After graduating from the Iowa City-based University of Iowa, Dr. Scerpella completed a residency at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison. She continued her training with a fellowship at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore.
