Orthopedic

Jonnie Vanderhoef, CRNA, settled a whistleblower lawsuit with Sparrow Carson Hospital in Carson City, Mich., the Lansing State Journal reports.

Here are four things to know.

1. Lawyers for Mr. Vanderhoef and Sparrow Health System reached the agreement March 26. Details of the settlement were not disclosed.

2. Mr. Vanderhoef filed a whistleblower suit alleging that he told hospital officials about how orthopedic surgeon Raymond Allard, DO, practiced poor infection control, but his complaints were ignored.

3. After Mr. Vanderhoef filed his suit, CMS threatened the hospital's Medicare reimbursement due to poor infection control. According to the lawsuit, Mr. Vanderhoef was confronted about photographs he had of a surgical site infection and fired; he claimed to have received the photos from a patient of Dr. Allard's.

4. Dr. Allard "voluntarily" gave up his privileges at Sparrow Carson in February. Sparrow Carson Hospital CEO Matthew Thompson and CNO Barb McQuillan, BSN, RN, also left, and the hospital submitted a plan of correction to federal regulators.
