The American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons will reward Mohit N. Gilotra, MD, and his team with the 2018 Charles S. Neer Award.

Here are seven highlights:

1. Dr. Gilotra, an assistant orthopedics professor at Baltimore-based University of Maryland School of Medicine, served as principal investigator and senior author of the study.

2. The team discovered an effective way to limit the risk of infection after shoulder surgery, outlined in their paper, "Benzoyl Peroxide Effectively Decreases Pre-Operative Propionibacterium acnes Shoulder Burden: A Randomized Clinical Trial."

3. Reserachers found benzoyl peroxide is more effective than chlorhexidine gluconate at reducing Propionibacterium acnes bacteria on the shoulder.

4. R. Frank Henn III, MD, UMSOM associate orthopedics professor, and S. Ashfaq Hasan, MD, UMSOM associate orthopedics professor and chief of the elbow and shoulder program, served as co-authors.

5. Dr. Gilotra and team are the first to receive the award from the Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Virginia region.

6. The researchers will receive the award March 10 in New Orleans.

7. The award is named after Charles S. Neer II, MD, who founded the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons in 1982.
