Orthopedic surgeon Richard E. Polly, MD, died on March 26, 2017, according to The Sabetha Herald.
Here are five things to know:
1. Dr. Polly completed a traveling fellowship to the eight major orthopedic centers of the British Isles.
2. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant Commander at the Navy Hospital in San Diego and was called up during the Vietnam War as part of a surgical team from the West Coast sent to help evacuate Saigon.
3. Dr. Polly retired in 2014 after practicing in Topeka (Kan.) for 39 years.
4. He specialized in hand and foot surgery and was past president of the former Memorial Hospital of Topeka.
5. Dr. Polly was a member of the American Medical Society, the Mid-America Orthopaedic Association, the Mid-Central Orthopedic Society, and fellow of the American Hand Society, the American Foot and Ankle Society and American College of Surgeons.
