The Leawood-based Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute is slated to open an orthopedic urgent care center early next month, according to the Kansas City Business Journal.

Here's what you need to know:

1. The center, called Ortho Urgent Care, will offer extended hours to see patients for fractures, sprains, torn ligaments, bruises and minor lacerations.

2. Treatment at Ortho Urgent Care will including diagnostic imaging, splinting and casting.

3. Patients with more severe injuries — or in need of MRI or rehabilitative therapy — will be directed to Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute.

4. Orthopedic surgeons from Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute will staff the urgent care center, along with specialized physician assistants and nurses.

5. Staff at Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute say that visiting an orthopedic urgent care center is more cost-effective than visiting an emergency room, in part because patients will receive appropriate treatment more quickly.
