Orthopedic

Daniel C. Allison, MD, is scheduled to perform the first bone anchored prosthesis surgery in southern California. Dr. Allison is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in orthopedic oncology, anterior hip replacement and joint reconstruction.

Here's what you need to know:

1. The patient is a former police officer with an above knee amputation.

2. The Osseoanchored Prosthesis for the Rehabilitation of Amputees device implants a titanium fixture into the bone. A rod, which is connected to the prosthetic leg, is then attached through the skin.

3. This procedure contrasts traditional prosthetics, which uses a ball and socket design. The socket, which is connected to a prosthetic leg, is placed around the end of the affected limb. However, this device requires enough surface area on the limb to attach the socket.

4. The bone anchored prosthesis procedure advertises it leads to greater mobility, range of motion and comfort than traditional prosthetics.
