Physicians see 'selfie elbow' as legitimate medical condition — 5 insights

"Selfie elbow" is joining the ranks of similar conditions like tennis elbow and golfer's elbow as a genuine medical disorder, according to Science World Report.

Here are five insights:

 

1. NBC's Today Show co-host Hoda Kotba recently visited an orthopedic surgeon who told her she was suffering from selfie elbow.

 

2. Jordan D. Metzl, MD, a sports medicine physician at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, said the soreness and pain associated with selfie elbow comes from the repetitive action of taking selfies.

 

3. Dr. Metzl recommends patients suffering from selfie elbow take pain relievers for inflammation, ice the area and exercise the muscles.

 

4. Charles Kim, MD, a rehabilitation and pain management physician at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City, suggests using a selfie stick that works like an arm extension to ease pressure on the elbow.

 

5. An NDTV report showed a rise in technology-related injuries in teenagers, such as gaming, chatting, selfie-taking, texting and tweeting.
