Women fare better than men after total joint replacement surgery: 5 facts

According to a recent study presented at the 2015 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, women are less likely than men to have complications after joint replacement surgery.

Here are five facts:

 

1. Approximately 332,000 total hip replacements are performed in the United States annually.

 

2. Each year, 719,000 total knee replacements are performed in the United States.

 

3. The Centers for Disease Control anticipate hip replacements will reach 600,000 and knee replacements will reach three million by 2030.

 

4. Women who underwent total hip replacement were generally older than their male counterparts typically 70 years vs. 65 years.  

 

5. Gary Stein, MD, of Santa Rosa Orthopaedics Surgeons, stated the advancements in joint replacement procedures enable artificial joints to last patients for 10 to 20 years.
