Sports medicine specialist Wayne Derman, MD, PhD, has been named medical director of the International Paralympic Committee.
Dr. Derman serves as head of the division of sport and exercise medicine at Stellenbosch University in South Africa, according to a May 15 news release from the IPC.
He joined IPC in 2011 and served as chair of the committee from 2023 to 2024. He served as IPC medical director at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games and chief medical officer for the South African Team at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, and the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, as well as for the South African Paralympic Team at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing and the 2012 Paralympic Games in London.
Dr. Derman specializes in injury prevention, athletic health and athletes with disabilities. In his role he will oversee the organization’s medical strategy and research initiatives, including injury and illness surveys, sport science, biomechanics and equipment research.
