Indiana’s state budget committee has allocated $30 million for an initiative to retain the status of Warsaw, Ind., as “the orthopedic capital of the world,” according to a June 14 report from NBC affiliate WNDU.

Warsaw is currently home to approximately one-third of the world’s orthopedic manufacturing companies, and two-thirds of the world’s hip and knee manufacturing companies. However, the city has faced some uncertainty after Medtronic announced plans to relocate some operations away from Warsaw.

Expenditure of the funds will be overseen by OrthoWorx, a nonprofit supporting orthopedic industry development in Indiana.

A portion of the money is expected to go toward developing housing in the area, which currently does not meet workforce demand. Funds will also go toward the creation of an orthopedic training and research center, which aims to create a talent pipeline for new employees.

At the Becker's 23rd Annual Spine, Orthopedic and Pain Management-Driven ASC + The Future of Spine Conference, taking place June 18–20 in Chicago, spine surgeons, orthopedic leaders and ASC executives will come together to explore minimally invasive techniques, ASC growth strategies and innovations shaping the future of outpatient spine care.
