Kenneth Chakour, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Fox Valley Orthopedics in Geneva, Ill., became the first physician in Illinois and among the first nationwide to use new auto-planning software for the Velys robotic-assisted knee replacement system.
The software uses machine learning and surgeon-defined preferences to help develop and adjust surgical plans in real time during knee replacement procedures, according to an October news release shared with Becker’s.
It adjusts the plan based on how the patient’s knee and surrounding soft tissue respond during surgery, while allowing surgeons to review and modify the recommendations.
The software also supports different surgical alignment approaches, allowing physicians to use their preferred techniques. Clinical decisions, including implant placement, remain under the surgeon’s control.
At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
