Physicians come to terms with new roles after disabilities sideline careers — 5 notes

Jon Tucker, MD, and Larry McNulty, MD, are two physicians who have had to fallback on different career positions after medical complications, according to Trib Live.

1. Dr. Tucker was an orthopedic surgeon at St. Clair Hospital in Mt. Lebanon, Pa.

 

2. Dr. Tucker suffered from a degenerative disease that weakened his arm, leaving him unable to operate and ending his 25-year career.

 

3. Dr. McNulty, an obstetrician and gynecologist at Allegheny Health Network had to end his career due to complications from eye surgery.

 

4. Both physicians said their experiences with unexpected disabilities forced them to better understand their vulnerabilities and the inescapable truth that doctors need doctors.

 

5. Dr. Tucker is beginning his own consulting firm, and Dr. McNulty is currently staying at home.
