Here are five points:

1. Professor Giwa discussed back pain challenges at the 2015 Annual Scientific Conference and Workshop.

2. The National Orthopedic Hospital in Igbobi, Lagos organized the conference.

3. Professor Giwa said, “None of us orthopedic surgeons can answer this very important question in spite of our numerous years of practice. We can offer medication, we can offer surgery, but we must be cautious with our surgical approach to managing back pain.”

4. Various causes of back pain include trauma, infections, aging, smoke and sedentary lifestyle.

5. To manage back pain, orthopedists should not recommend bed rest, according to Professor Giwa. Rather, anti-flammatory medications and exercise may better serve patients.
