5 things to know about Biofix’s bone cement for orthopedic patients

Biofix developed new bone cement that aims to make treatment more affordable and easier for orthopedic patients, according to Herald Business.

Here are five things to know:

 

1. The aluminum-free cement is comprised of glass ionomer.

 

2. Biofix CEO Caitlin Pierlot said, “Until now, no one has been able to make a GIC… without aluminum that has the handling properties and strength needed for orthopedic applications.”

 

3. Medical professionals inject the Biofix cement into osteoporosis patients’ vertebrae. The patients receiving the injection have suffered a vertebral compression fracture.

 

4. The Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency provided an academic grant for the cement.

 

5. Biofix seeks a $1.3 million equity investment, which will go toward applying for FDA approval. Biofix hopes to apply for approval by the end of 2017.
