HSS names medicine, rheumatology chief

New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery appointed Anca Dinu Askanase, MD, as chair of the department of medicine and chief of the division of rheumatology, effective in April. 

Dr. Askanase brings more than two decades of leadership experience in academic rheumatology. She will succeed S. Louis Bridges Jr., MD, PhD, who is set to retire in March, according to a Feb. 3 system news release. 

Since 2014, Dr. Askanase has served on the faculty at New York City-based Columbia University Irving Medical Center, where she is a professor of medicine and directs the Columbia Lupus Center. She previously practiced at NYU Langone Health and the Hospital for Joint Diseases, also in New York City. 

Dr. Askanase has led or participated in more than 150 clinical investigations and held leadership positions with organizations that include the American College of Rheumatology and the Lupus Research Alliance.
