This year’s report had more than 20,000 respondents across 29 specialties, and results were weighted to the American Medical Association’s physician distribution by specialty, state and gender. Respondents were required to be currently practicing physicians in the U.S., and responses were taken from November 2017 through February 2018.

2. 22 percent – being very good at what I do/finding answers and diagnoses
3. 22 percent – knowing that I’m making the world a better place
4. 12 percent – making good money at a job that I like
5. 3 percent – teaching
6. 2 percent – being proud of being a doctor
7. 1 percent – nothing

1. 31 percent – having so many rules and regulations
2. 20 percent – difficulties getting fair reimbursement
3. 20 percent – having to work with an EHR system
4. 9 percent – dealing with difficult patients
