New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery has been in operation for more than 160 years, and in 2025 alone surgeons have performed more than 45,000 orthopedic cases, according to data shared by CEO Bryan Kelly, MD, on LinkedIn.
The fact sheet signed by Dr. Kelly, Surgeon-in-Chief & Medical Director Douglas Padgett, MD, and three more surgeons-in-chief emeritus outlines multiple key statistics about HSS.

1. HSS has 160 orthopedic surgeons and 10 orthopedic sub-specialized service lines.
2. In 2025 more than 45,000 orthopedic surgeries were performed.
3. HSS’ research team published about 1,200 articles per year.
4. HSS has more than 100 active clinical trials and more than 90 patient registries.
5. Fifty-five principal investigators with HSS have earned federal grant funding.
6. HSS has about 100 innovative technologies in its pipeline.
7. In 2026, eight orthopedic surgeons will serve in leadership positions with orthopedic professional organizations.
8. HSS trains 46 residents, 75 fellows and 130 medical students annually.
