Hoosiers shake up care team at season’s end

The Indiana University basketball team is shaking up its athletic care department, according to a March 31 report from The Herald-Times.

Longtime Hoosier head physician, Larry Rink, MD, retired at the end of the 2024-2025 athletic season after serving with the team since 1980.

Furthermore, the team has decided not to renew longtime athletic trainer Tim Garl’s contract for what would have been his 45th season with the team.

Mr. Garl’s contract will not be renewed because the team’s new coach, Darian DeVries, wants a “fresh start.” Mr. Garl, whose last day was March 31, is currently named in a pending lawsuit filed by former Hoosier basketball players.

The lawsuit, brought by former players Haris Mujezinovic and Charlie Miller, alleges that former team physician Brad Bomba Sr. subjected players to “medically unnecessary, invasive, harassing and demeaning digital rectal examinations.”

Mr. Garl was Dr. Bomba’s direct supervisor, and the lawsuit alleges he had knowledge of the physician’s behavior.

Mr. Garl has filed to have the complaint dismissed, but a judge has yet to issue a ruling.
