Here are three things to know:
1. Study authors used a private insurance database to assess patients who underwent hip arthroscopy from 2007 to 2015 and continued to attend follow-ups for a minimum six months.
2. Preoperative opioid analgesic use was the most significant risk factor for prolonged postoperative use. It was also a significant risk factor for postoperative complications, such as emergency room visits and conversion to total hip arthroplasty.
3. Preoperative anxiolytic prescriptions, substance use or abuse, morbid obesity and back pain were also risk factors for prolonged postoperative opioid analgesic use.
