John-Kevin Dolce, MD, former captain of UVA’s football team, will return to the Charlottesville, Va.-based university to complete his orthopedic residency in July, according to an April 18 report from CVille Right Now.

Dr. Dolce will fill one of UVA’s five residency slots, which 1,000 students applied for.

“I think orthopedics is a specialty that maybe appeals to a lot of former athletes because they dealt with orthopedic injuries during their career,” Bobby Chhabra, MD, chair of UVA Orthopedics, told Right Now.

Dr. Chhabra confirmed to the publication that Dr. Dolce, who led the football team 15 years ago, secured one of the coveted slots.

At the Becker's 23rd Annual Spine, Orthopedic and Pain Management-Driven ASC + The Future of Spine Conference, taking place June 11-13 in Chicago, spine surgeons, orthopedic leaders and ASC executives will come together to explore minimally invasive techniques, ASC growth strategies and innovations shaping the future of outpatient spine care.
