Early clinical data positive for handheld robot for knee replacement

James Womack, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at Clinton, Mo.-based Golden Valley Memorial Healthcare, has published early clinical results on a new handheld robotic system for total knee arthroplasty.

The study, published in the Journal of Experimental Orthopaedics, assessed the first clinical cases performed using the wireless device, which demonstrated precise implant alignment, strong functional outcomes, efficient procedure times and no reported adverse events, according to a Jan. 8 news release.

Dr. Womack has performed more than 1,500 robotic-assisted joint replacement surgeries since joining Golden Valley Memorial in 2011.

The compact system could expand access to robotic joint replacement by offering the precision of larger platforms in a more portable format, according to the release.
