Drs. Rodney Plaster & Sarat Kunapuli offer free orthopedic services in El Salvador: 5 highlights

Rodney Plaster, MD, and Sarat Kunapuli, MD, of Eastern Oklahoma Orthopedic Center in Tulsa, Okla., traveled to El Salvador to perform knee and hip replacements, according to Tulsa World.

Here are five highlights:

 

1. The trip to Santa Tecla, El Salvador involved 40 medical professionals. The surgeons performed 72 joint replacements in about four days at San Rafael National Hospital.

 

2. The group included physicians, recovery room nurses, physical therapists and volunteers.

 

3. The trip was planned by Operation Walk Utah’s medical mission trip, which offers free joint replacement surgeries for patients in the United States and developing countries.

 

4. Dr. Plaster and Dr. Kunapuli were joined by eight other healthcare providers from Oklahoma Surgical Hospital, Saint Francis and Eastern Oklahoma Orthopaedic Center.

 

5. While Dr. Plaster has annually traveled to El Salvador to provide services since 2009, this was Dr. Kunapuli’s first trip.
