The funding is part of a partnership with the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation, which began in 2012 and will run through 2017. The funding was dispensed between multiple biomedical research projects and is used to help research teams launch their projects, ranging from lab studies to healthcare innovations.
Ferris Pfeiffer, MD, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at the MU department of bioengineering and orthopedic surgery was awarded some of the grant money for the second year in a row to improve cartilage transplant success rates, according to the report. He works with James Stannard, MD, the J. Vernon Luck Sr. Distinguished Professor in Orthopaedic Surgery and chair of the orthopedic surgery department at the MU School of Medicine.
Their project focuses on focal defects in knee and shoulder cartilage, typically for younger patients with issues but who are not ready for knee replacements.
