Thomas Byrd, MD, is set to perform hip surgery on Sean Murphy, a catcher for the Atlanta Braves, in Nashville on Sept. 11.
The surgery will repair a labral tear in Mr. Murphy’s right hip, according to a Sept. 8 news release from mlb.com.
Mr. Murphy will miss the rest of the 2025 MLB season, but may be able to fully recover before the start of the 2026 season. The Braves expect the recovery timeline to be about four months.
He has been dealing with a right hip ailment for the past three years, according to the team’s president of baseball operations.
Dr. Byrd is an orthopedic hip specialist and sports medicine physician at Nashville (Tenn.) Hip Institute at TOA. He is a team physician for the NFL’s Tennessee Titans and also serves as a consulting orthopedic surgeon for numerous teams in the NFL, NHL, NBA, WNBA and MLB.
