Dr. Tad Gerlinger’s study: Knee replacement surgery effective for soldiers

Tad Gerlinger, MD, has conducted a study showing total joint arthroplasty surgery can be an effective solution to the habitual wear-and-tear on soldiers’ knees, eventually leading to their return to the field, according to a Fox News report.

Dr. Gerlinger, an orthopedic surgeon at Chicago-based Midwest Orthopedics at Rush Medical Center, led the test at San Antonio Military Medical Center. He found that 86 percent of patients returned to duty after the surgery, 70 percent of which were deployed to a combat zone and completed a successful full tour afterward.

The need for total knee replacement for soldier is about double the civilian population, prior studies have found.

Dr. Gerlinger is no stranger to the military life — a retired colonel himself, his accolades include a Bronze Star Medal.
