Mr. McCollum underwent surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb. The operation took place at the Hospital for Special Surgery, according to a news release from nba.com.
Dr. Carlson is an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in sports injuries of the hand, wrist and upper extremities at Hospital for Special Surgery. She also serves as the official second opinion physician for the NBA and a consultant hand surgeon for the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets, two other NBA teams, as well as the New York Mets, an MLB team.
David Altchek, MD, also consulted with Mr. McCollum on a torn labrum in his right shoulder. It was determined that surgery is not required to repair his shoulder, the release said.
Dr. Altchek is an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist at the Hospital for Special Surgery. He also serves as a medical consultant to the NBA and as the medical director for the Mets.
Mr. McCollum is expected to make a complete recovery before the start of training camp in October.
