Dr. Stuart, a knee specialist, joined Mayo Clinic in 1988 for an orthopedic surgery residency, the report said. He had fellowship training at Fowler Kennedy Sports Medicine Clinic in Ontario, Canada before returning to Mayo Clinic.
Dr. Stuart’s last surgery was performed Nov. 9, and his last clinic day was Dec. 14.
During his career he was co-director Mayo Clinic Orthopedics and Sports Medicine alongside physical medicine and rehabilitation physician Edward Laskowski, MD. He was the team physician for USA Hockey for six Olympic Games, served on the International Ice Hockey Federation medical committee and was a second medical opinion physician for the NHL Players Association.
Orthopedic surgeon Aaron Krych, MD, who succeeded Dr. Stuart as co-chair of the sports medicine division, is now the chair of orthopedics.
