Dr. Bellamy was endorsed this week by the former president of Florida State University, John Thrasher, the report said.
Mr. Thrasher has been involved in Florida politics himself, serving as speaker of the Florida House of Representatives and chair of the Republican Party of Florida.
He served as FSU president from 2014 until he stepped down in 2021.
Dr. Bellamy, who also works part-time as a police officer, entered the race in October of 2021 to run against Mr. Matlow, who has been in office since 2018.
