The 151st Kentucky Derby is set to take place in Louisville May 3, featuring horses and jockeys vying to win the championship series.

While the Derby is often focused on the racehorses, the jockeys also have an onsite medical team providing care for them, according to an April 30 report from Fox affiliate WDRB.

Victor Kremser, MD, a nonsurgical orthopedics and sports medicine physician at Norton Orthopedic Institute in Louisville, serves as co-medical director for Norton Healthcare at Churchill Downs.

Dr. Kremser treats the Derby’s jockeys year-round, helping them to manage weight requirements, as well as any other physical and mental challenges that may appear.

Norton provides on-site care at Churchill Downs, with Dr. Kremser and his team working on the rail alongside the racetrack during every race.

The team responds to acute injuries, including concussions, according to the report.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
