The procedure will be Mr. Antone’s third major elbow surgery. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2017 and 2021, according to an April 9 news release from MLB.com.
Mr. Antone left a game on April 7 after feeling discomfort in his elbow. An MRI exam revealed that his flexor mass tendon tore completely off his bone and he has a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament.
This upcoming surgery will be similar to a Tommy John procedure, but Dr. Kremchek will insert an internal brace to repair the UCL in Mr. Antone’s elbow instead of using tendons from his wrist.
Mr. Antone will miss the entirety of the 2024 MLB season, the release said.
Dr. Kremchek is the Reds’ medical director and orthopedic surgeon.
