ChatGPT could write orthopedic discharge notes faster than humans in six simulated cases, according to a March 21 study in ActaOrthopaedica.

Researchers created six fictional orthopedic cases and had a junior attending orthopedic surgeon and ChatGPT-4 generate discharge documents with the same information. ChatGPT and the surgeon’s notes were comparable in quality, but the generative AI program produced them 10 times faster.

There were four events of hallucinations, or inaccuracies, in ChatGPT’s notes compared to six in the surgeon’s notes.

Researchers concluded that the study “shows it has great potential for making these documents more efficient in orthopedic care. ChatGPT-4 has the potential to significantly reduce the administrative burden on healthcare professionals.”

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
