Dr. Bittner received a request for the virtual training from the American Association of Hand Surgery and gave an online presentation to more than 75 Ukrainian doctors, the report said. Dr. Bittner, who practices at Fullerton, Calif.-based Providence St. Jude Medical Center, said some surgeons were treating patients in basements because some hospitals were occupied by Russian soldiers.

Dr. Bittner previously served as an orthopedic trauma surgeon for the Navy in Afghanistan and operated on more than 250 people.
