Ashley Ross Jr., MD, a Little Rock, Ark.-based orthopedic surgeon whose career spanned private practice, military service and the VA, died Sept. 27. He was 96.
Dr. Ross earned his medical degree from the University of Arkansas, also in Little Rock. After his internship, he served as an Air Force physician, with postings in Korea and Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.
He trained in orthopedics at Charity Hospital in New Orleans and practiced at the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans until 1969. He then returned to Little Rock and opened a private practice.
He held several leadership roles in Little Rock. He was president of the Pulaski County Medical Society from 1990 to 1991, chief of the orthopedic section at Baptist Medical Center and chief of orthopedics at Southwest Hospital. He also served six years on the board of Presbyterian Village.
He stayed in private practice until he was nearly 70 and then joined the medical staff at the VA in Little Rock. He retired fully after open-heart surgery at age 80.
