Are orthopedic surgeons affected by competition?

The majority of orthopedic surgeons say their income is either somewhat or considerably affected by competing physician practices, according to Medscape’s 2024 “Orthopedist Compensation Report,” published May 24.

While 46% say their income is somewhat affected, an additional 13% report being considerably affected. Only 42% of orthopedic surgeons said they are not affected at all by competing practices, a smaller share than physicians overall (64%). 

In contrast, the majority of orthopedic surgeons said they do not see any income effects due to other medical businesses. 

Only 27% of orthopedists see an income impact due to other medical businesses, compared to 72% who see no effect.
