The award is a nod to Dr. Buckwalter’s contributions to orthopedic education and research. He works as an orthopedic surgeon and professor at the Iowa City-based university. He’s also the Arthur Steindler Chair inOrthopedic Surgery.
“To me, [the award] is a recognition of the UI and the people who supported me and made all this possible,” he said in a news release. “So, certainly it’s personal, but it’s also for all the people that helped me.”
During his career, he has been awarded many research grants focusing on preventing arthritis from joint injuries. Outside of research, he has performed several complicated tumor surgeries to restore limb function and relieve pain.
