UCSF names orthopedic surgery chair

UCSF Health appointed Benjamin Ma, MD, chair of its orthopedic surgery department, according to Newswise.

Dr. Ma will assume his role on Jan. 1. He has been vice chair of adult clinical operations within the orthopedic surgery department since 2018, and has previous experience as the surgical director of the UCSF Mount Zion campus and chief of sports medicine and shoulder surgery for the system.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Ma has a robust background in research on cartilage imaging and dynamic MRI scans for ACL injuries. He is a founding member of the Multicenter Orthopaedic Outcome Network shoulder group and research chair of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.

During his time at UCSF, Dr. Ma has also mentored 30 residents who went on to sports medicine fellowships and more than 70 residents and fellows on their research and career choices.
