Patient-reported outcome measures are being increasingly utilized to evaluate the success of hip and knee arthroplasty procedures for patients, according to the American Joint Replacement Registry's 2023 annual report on hip and knee arthroplasty procedural trends and patient outcomes.

Over the last year, the American Joint Replacement Registry has experienced substantial growth in patient-reported outcome measures captured.

By the end of 2022, 496 sites submitted patient-reported measures, up 24% from the year prior. About 86% of patients achieved a meaningful improvement after total knee arthroplasty, according to the collected data in the report, which was shared with Becker's on Nov. 3.

Patient-reported outcomes will help to improve patient care for both spine and orthopedics.

"Upcoming studies will give further insight into radiographic and patient reported outcomes metrics. With the use of more reliable and accurate imaging modalities, we will improve our understanding of the effect of global sagittal and coronal spinal alignment and segmental bone density. Patient-reported outcomes tracked pre- and postoperatively combined with patient expectations will allow us to better counsel our patients," Sohaib Hashmi, MD, a physician at UCI Health in Orange, Calif., told Becker's

Thomas Graham, MD, physician-in-chief at Allentown, Pa.-based Lehigh Valley Orthopedic Institute, also emphasized the importance of data collection to improve patient-reported measures.

"I also think partnering with our data is important, and that could have a couple manifestations. As we move into a brand new realm of having a way to turn information into insight, this could help us render better care at the right time and monitor patient-reported outcomes," he told Becker's
