Cleveland Clinic London completes first AR-assisted knee replacement

Cleveland Clinic London completed the city’s first total knee replacement with augmented reality assistance, the hospital said in an Aug. 17 news release.

Panagiotis Gikas, MD, PhD, led the surgical team during the July 18 surgery. He used AR technology to plan the procedure and implant position, and during the procedure he wore a headset to visualize the patient’s anatomy in realtime.

Cleveland Clinic London opened in March. Cleveland Clinic London is one of the first private hospitals in the U.K. that can perform intraoperative imaging for brain and spinal cord disorders.
